Two decades later, she's still my closest friend — even though she's a boomer and I'm Gen X. She knows I love food and hate food after my mother took me to Weight Watchers when I was 13. AdvertisementNow, she's helping me get through a divorceIn September, my husband of 21 years surprised me with a divorce. I'm comforted by the love she found in a second husband a few years after her divorce. On the long road to divorce recovery, Kathy keeps showing up.

This was nothing short of a communist invasion, in his eyes, and the patriots of Green Charter needed to rise up and confront the Red Peril. But the backlash in Green Charter represents something seldom seen since the Red Scare: a quasi-militant, homegrown resistance to the perceived threat of communism at home. But as the war over Gotion began to consume Green Charter, Riebow began to feel that the township board was behaving "too secretly." It's easy to dismiss what's happened in Green Charter as yet another sign of America's descent into dangerous incivility. Asked about Gotion's plans in Green Charter, Panetta replied, "I don't think there's any question that they are going to take advantage of that situation."

The discombobulating outfit was, in fact, the opening look of Vivienne Westwood’s Fall-Winter 2024 show in Paris — a collection that has proved divisive online. “Vivienne Westwood will be turning in her grave watching Sam Smith in this get up,” wrote one disgruntled fan on X. While many online lamented how Kronthaler’s latest season has “defiled” and “tainted” Westwood’s fashion reputation. The 1990s era of Vivienne Westwood was defined by shape and silhouette, as demonstrated here with Linda Evangelista walking the Fall-Winter 1995 show in Paris. Kronthaler's first solo show for Vivienne Westwood at Paris Fashion Week felt more aligned with the brand's popular 90s silhouettes.

U.S. President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden talks to reporters outside the U.S. Capitol on December 13, 2023 in Washington, DC. Hunter Biden will appear a week after James Biden, the president's brother, told lawmakers that at no point during his 50-year business career was Joe Biden involved in his work. Joe Biden attended dinners, spoke on speakerphone, showed up to meetings, and had coffee with his son's foreign business associates. Republicans first issued a subpoena to Hunter Biden in early November, but through his lawyer, he chose not to comply with it for months. Hunter Biden will repeat what he and other witnesses have previously told the committees, that his father was not involved in his business, the sources said.

“Seeing as how President Trump endorsed Mike Bost, Matt always finds himself on the wrong side of history,” Miller told CNN. After the GOP leadership’s candidate, Craig Riedel, was caught on tape criticizing Trump, multiple Republicans pulled their endorsement, including Miller and House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik. And now, Miller is inserting herself into another incumbent primary race in Illinois: She also is backing Bailey over Bost, her House GOP colleague. But this time, Miller and Gaetz are on the opposite side of Trump in the race. “Darren Bailey proudly stands with President Trump despite disagreeing with him on this endorsement,” a campaign spokesman said.

Read previewWhen President Joe Biden addressed the sudden death of Russian dissident Alexey Navalny last week, he had no doubt where the blame lay. But where Biden sounded less certain, was on how the Russian president should pay for the alleged crime. For instance, the US has sought to cut off Russia's export of oil and gas, a trade that is at the heart of the Russian economy. Putin has placed the Russian economy on a war footing, with 6% of GDP spent on arms and ammunition production, meaning that US attempts to seriously constrict Russian weapons production have failed. And there remain options open to the US and other countries in the West if they choose to punish Russia even further.

Yet Jerome Powell and his central bank colleagues have rebuffed those forecasts, and markets have pushed their rate cut predictions further into 2024. And the producer price index for January came in at 0.3% on Friday, higher than the expected 0.1% increase. Jimmy Chang, the chief investment officer for Rockefeller Global Family Office, told Business Insider that it would be difficult for the Fed to cut rates in the current landscape. AdvertisementThe Fed's next moveThe case for keeping rates unchanged has gained momentum over recent weeks, but both markets and the Fed ultimately expect easing interest rates in 2024. Bank of America forecasts that the first cut likely won't happen until June, and policymakers could opt to cut rates "later and faster."

The "Volmageddon" episode happened six years ago after traders piled into a bunch of ETFs that were designed to return the inverse of market volatility (essentially betting on a calm market). And when volatility went up in February 2018, it tanked those strategies, sending the S&P 500 down more than 10% in two weeks. As VIX futures expire, the S&P 500 is seeing stronger price reactions. The short-volatility trade became very popular after 2010 when volatility was low, and traders could make money betting against market turbulence. AdvertisementIt's not a major concern right away as volatility upticks have been small, and the S&P 500 has remained resilient.

The price hike comes a year after Shopify raised prices for its base subscription plan. Many have shrugged off the most recent price increase. Shopify frequently touts its third-party app ecosystem as an advantage for merchants looking to grow their business efficiently. Many of the most popular Shopify apps have also raised prices recently. It's possible that some lower-volume Plus merchants will downgrade to more basic subscription options due to cost.

The odds of a global recession keep going down

Ned Davis Research said economic indicators suggest the odds of a global downturn are diminishing. "The global economic lull we saw in the second half of 2023 appears to be abating." In a note published Tuesday, they highlighted that economic indicators across manufacturing, supply chains, and equities suggest the odds of a global recession have come down. On a historical basis, it's still below the long-term average of 53.2, but the global composite PMI has a recession threshold of 47.8. On Monday, mainland Chinese markets slumped again after their worst weeks in years. Under a Friday post by the US Embassy’s Weibo account about protecting wild giraffes, many Chinese people complained about the stock market rout and the challenging economy. “The US government, please help Chinese stock investors,” a user said in a repost of the animal protection article. Investors seemed to have shrugged off Chinese regulators’ latest pledge to bolster the stock market. On Sunday, the China Securities Regulatory Commission vowed to prevent “abnormal fluctuations” in the stock market and stabilize confidence.

But with practically all of Wall Street in agreement that no changes will be made, investors are focused on Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s afternoon press conference where he’ll answer questions about his outlook for monetary policy. Conflict in the Middle East and the Red Sea in particular “poses a risk to global trade,” said EY Senior Economist Lydia Boussour on Tuesday. That’s a huge blow to trade: As much as 15% of global trade and 25%-30% of global container shipments transit through the waterway. “For now, we don’t expect the situation in the Red Sea to substantially alter the outlook for global inflation and global monetary policy this year,” said Boussour. In October 2022, Roberta Kaplan flew to Donald Trump’s estate, Mar-a-Lago, in Florida, to question him under oath in the defamation lawsuit that her client, the writer E. Jean Carroll, had filed against him after she accused him of sexually assaulting her. “She’s not my type,” Mr. Trump said when he was asked if he raped Ms. Carroll in the mid-1990s in a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York. Then he shrugged, looked at Ms. Kaplan and pointed at her. “You wouldn’t be a choice of mine either, to be honest with you,” he said, according to a transcript of the deposition. “I would not, under any circumstances, have any interest in you.

The announcement shocked civil rights advocates, who countered that the state's system is already arduous and this latest requirement will only further worsen voter disenfranchisement throughout the state. However, in GOP-dominant Tennessee, Republican leaders have repeatedly shrugged off calls to reform the state's voting-rights restoration policy. Voting rights advocates have argued the legal interpretation was way off-base. The change, instituted by elections officials in July, has since halted almost all voting rights restorations: More than 60 people were denied and just one person approved. “It's un-American.”Democratic Rep. Joe Towns likened the state's policy to Jim Crow-era laws that were put in place with the intent of stopping Black people from participating in elections.
